Outside of New Orleans, one of the lesser known facts about the Saints football team this year is that quarterback Drew Brees purchased a book called, “Finish Strong” by Dan Green, found it to be inspirational, and bought a copy for members of the team. Instead of a simple nice gift, everyone on the team also found it inspirational. It became a motto for the team all the way through finishing the Super Bowl.
What’s the book about? It uses sports stories to show how athletes in various settings have given their best and the difference that it made, not only on the field but far beyond. The book is meant to inspire us all to do our best no matter what we are doing in life.
I always believe every good book (particularly inspirational ones) draw from “the Good Book.” God calls on us to give our best. He also is not impressed when we give less (“So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold–I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Rev 3:16).
Too often we don’t try to “finish strong” with our faith. We simply say “grace” will get us over the finish line. Maybe but is that what God wants of us? Is that why God gave us this life to live?
If you are interested in “Finish Strong” we are going to have an upcoming discussion on the book at Parkway Presbyterian. I’ll share more details on this later. I also will be happy to have an online discussion of the book with any who are interested. The ISBN number is 978-1-60810-013-2.
Who or what inspires you? Who or what helps you to go the extra mile?
Let’s talk about it!
