Outward

Lyrics from Soul Asylum’s Runaway Train:

Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life’s mystery seems so faded

I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just drownin’ in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train

Everything is cut and dry
Day and night, earth and sky
Somehow I just don’t believe it

I think they capture the mood of many in our culture quite well.  We are encouraged from birth to acquire more and that if we just buy this, or that, or live there, or know these people that we will be happy.  And what happens?  Our happiness fades.  Our joy of life fades.  And we do become jaded.

Life is about getting to know others.  Helping others.  Making their lives (instead of our own) better.  Jesus drew people to him like a magnet and had no home, no fancy clothes, no chariot or any of the other things people would have yearned for in that time and place.

Are we inwardly focused?  If so, we are on a runaway train.

Let’s fight against the impulse and look around us and make a difference.

All the best,

Tom
